The Shale Trail

West Lothian's Shale Trail is a 16 mile cycling and walking route between West Calder and Winchburgh which is loosely based on the old, and sadly now long gone, ‘Paraffin Young Heritage Trail’.

It will take you on a journey through West Lothian's rich cultural, historical and scientific heritage by linking 19 locations via the use of QR codes on each of the waymarker posts.

Particular highlights of the new route include access to Greendykes, the Five Sisters bings and abandoned quarries re-inhabited by nature.

The Shale Trail website at https://shaletrail.co.uk/ includes maps of the trail, loops and routes, stories, a kids shale trail and much more.
